Recipe: Chocolate Cherry Smoothie

Do you ever have days where your cravings are so out of control that you'd like to just eat your way through your kitchen? Me too.

Enter: this smoothie.

I threw together this combination to try and create an afternoon snack that I felt good about eating, but that also filled my need for something sweet. This super simple blend kept my sugar cravings at bay and bought me another day in which I didn't give in to the temptation of leftover Easter Cadbury mini eggs.

Chocolate Cherry Smoothie
Ingredients:
1/2 ripe frozen banana
1 cup frozen sweet cherries
2 Tbs. unsweetened cocoa powder (I used raw cacao. I recommend selecting good quality cocoa powder for best flavor)
1 cup unsweetened vanilla cashew milk (see notes below)

Optional add-ins: to boost up this smoothie and make it extra satisfying, add a handful of spinach and a scoop of your favorite protein powder (I used plain collagen powder). To make it look fancy (and add some extra antioxidant and magnesium power), sprinkle some raw cacao nibs on top after blending.

Combine all ingredients, except cacao nibs, and blend until smooth. Sprinkle cacao nibs on top if desired, and enjoy while cold.

Notes: I used unsweetened vanilla cashew milk because I find that the taste of cashew milk is very mild (versus almond or coconut milk, which have fairly distinct flavors). You can sub in the milk of your choice. If you don't have vanilla nut milk, just use unflavored and add a few drops of vanilla extract. If you prefer a runnier smoothie consistency, or if your blender needs extra liquid to handle blending frozen fruit, feel free to adjust the amount of milk accordingly.
